Katie Rodgers is an artist I follow on Instagram, known for her ethereal Shadow Dancers. I've featured her in a piece here. She posted a video of a live-art piece with pigeons by the artist Duke Riley, in collaboration with Creative Time and the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
No one thinks much of pigeons, including myself. In NYC, they're constantly fluttering around, pecking at crumbs on the ground and ignoring all humans. However, they have had a past of extreme courage and honor. I recently visited the International Spy Museum down in Washington, D.C., and there was an entire room dedicated to the exploits of carrier pigeons during wars. They've flown through fire and successfully carried important messages that changed the course of battles. I'm sad when I think about the way they are treated now.
You can read more about the project on the site, but part of Riley's goal was to pay tribute to the history of pigeon-flying. Who would have thought pigeons could be used in such a way to create a beautiful night sky? When I saw the video, I was struck by how similar the birds looked to stars, Stars in New York! Can you imagine?
The pigeons twisted and turned; they soared across the sky in looping circles. It is absolutely beautiful, and a wonderful way to celebrate these birds. See the video at the link below:
